Author Guidelines

Please review these guidelines before submitting. Manuscripts that don’t follow them may be returned to the author before peer review.

Manuscript Types

  • Full-length research articles: Original research with complete methodology, results, and discussion. No strict length limit; manuscripts should be as concise as the science allows.
  • Review articles: Comprehensive reviews of a defined topic area. Authors should contact the Managing Editor before submitting a review to confirm fit.
  • Technical notes: Short communications presenting a focused result or method. Typically under 3,000 words.

Preparing Your Manuscript

Manuscripts must be submitted in English. Authors are responsible for ensuring their manuscript is written clearly and proofread before submission. RNDE does not provide language editing services; authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to seek editing assistance before submission.

The manuscript file should be submitted as a Microsoft Word (.docx) document prepared using the RNDE submission template. Figures may be embedded in the manuscript file for review. Separate figure files are requested after acceptance (see Figures and Tables below).

Please use SI units.

Please ensure that equations are editable (created with Word’s equation editor or MathType, not pasted as images).

Structure (full-length articles):

  • Title page: title, all author names and affiliations, corresponding author contact information, ORCID iDs (recommended)
  • Abstract: 150–250 words; no references
  • Keywords: 5–8 terms
  • Introduction
  • Materials and Methods (or equivalent)
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Conclusions
  • Acknowledgments (if applicable)
  • Funding Disclosure
  • Data Availability Statement
  • Conflict of Interest Statement
  • References

References

References may be submitted in any consistent citation style. Each reference must be complete (all authors, title, journal or publisher, year, volume, issue, and page range or article number) and must include a DOI where one exists. All references must be cited in the text. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all references.

After acceptance, RNDE converts references to its house style: numbered citations in square brackets, listed in order of first appearance in the text. Authors will be asked to review the converted references at the proof stage.

Figures and Tables

Figures and tables should be numbered consecutively and referenced in the text. Each figure and table must have a descriptive caption.

Figures embedded in the manuscript are sufficient for peer review. After acceptance, authors will be asked to provide each figure as a separate file meeting these requirements:

  • Charts, plots, diagrams, and line art: vector format preferred (SVG, EPS, or PDF exported directly from the plotting or drawing software). If vector is not possible, provide PNG at least 3000 pixels wide. Do not use JPEG for line art.
  • Photographs and other raster images: at least 2000 pixels wide for full-width figures and at least 1000 pixels wide for single-column figures, in TIFF, PNG, or high-quality JPEG.

Do not enlarge low-resolution images to meet these minimums; upscaling adds pixels but not detail. Contact the Managing Editor if an original image cannot meet these requirements.

Tables should be editable.

Funding Disclosure

To support transparency and avoid concerns about undeclared funding, please declare all sources of financial support that helped cover the expenses of the work reported in your article. Declare only the funds and grants directly relevant to that work; for example: This work was supported by [Funding Agency 1] under Grant [number]; [Funding Agency 2] under Grant [number]; and [Funding Agency 3] under Grant [number]. If no funding was obtained for the reported work, please state that no funding was obtained.

Use of AI Tools

ASNT supports the responsible and transparent use of artificial intelligence in manuscript preparation. By submitting a manuscript, authors agree to comply with ASNT’s Policy on the Ethical Use of AI.

Preprints

Authors may post preprints to servers such as arXiv or ESSOAr at any stage. Authors are encouraged to update their preprint with a link to the published article upon acceptance.

Submission

Submit manuscripts through the RNDE submission portal at rnde.asnt.org. New submissions require an ORCID iD for the corresponding author. Authors must confirm that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not under consideration elsewhere.

Questions about submission should be directed to the Managing Editor at rnde@asnt.org.
